Space Skilling Saturday 26 (just one small obstacle)

Location:- Rocktropian Space.
Time:- 1800 MA.
Present:- Wolta, Nocturaline & Myself

Session 26, this marks the 6th month anniversary of Space Skilling Saturday, we must be due a week off!

I seem to remember Cyrene having a training ground area, I seem to remember hunting in it in a quad, I seem to remember getting just one half decent loot. It’s not there now however my memories are of sometime ago so could be at fault.

I knew I would need to warp away from Cyrene as a sub warp trip at the start of a session would take at least an hour, the only issue was where to. During the week I had considered visiting the Locusta, it has been a long while since that happened but with only three of us and none wishing to hunt, that would probably be a stupid move. Stupid moves have there own attraction so I did not dismiss it out of hand. The other 2 options were Calypso space or Rocktropian space.

I was on-line and on the ship with time to spare, I was still undecided as to the location when Wolta logged in so we had a brief discussion, Wolta seemed keen on Rocktropia and wanted to visit the vampires, an argument that persuaded me instantly.

Nocturaline was notonaline, we decide to wait a while as with this being a warp trip to an area quite distant it would take her some time to catch up. She cameonaline about 1810, giving her apologies and by 1815 was ready for transport.

The ship was stationed at the edge of the Cyrene protective zone, so in less than a minute we were at warp. We arrived in the zone almost next to a Cosmic Horror and began taking damage.

I took the first hour in the chair, nothing remarkable happened, the lack of proximity of the space station was a bit of a bind once mobs stopped giving skills, instead of dragging them all the way to the station to dispose of them I drew them out of the zone a way then looped around to return to the zone. This worked better than I had thought as there were always plenty of fresh mobs in the area I had recently vacated.

Nocturaline took the next hour then Wolta followed her, I cannot describe what was going on outside but I do know I was kept busy at repair for the full 2 hours. I spent most of the time chatting with people, mostly Alaina Scotia Bonnie and Feyn An Talitha, always interesting but I fear I banged on about Lovecraft a little too much.

Surprisingly I did not feel like dozing off during this session and both Wolta and Nocturaline managed to remain concious throughout although both had become tired thus living up to their Sleepyhead status. I took the ship back to the station and manoeuvred it to it’s usual parking position at the outer boundary of the protective zone on a direct route to the planet.

Nocturaline logged on the ship, Wolta and I headed to the surface in my quad seeing just one red triangle on the way, it was sitting in wait. We headed for the planet whist keeping a watch on the foe, when it began to manoeuvre behind us I turned and headed straight for it, it turned and headed to the space station, it’s advantage gone.

Rocktropia is the best place for free-falling to the surface, there is a small pool of water with a TP in the middle, it’s a difficult target to land in the water and survive the fall. I missed by about 2 meters for both Wolta and myself.

Tonight’s entertainment was catching up with Mike & Mike podcasts  and also the latest from the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast at hppodcraft.com.

I wonder what has happened to Vinge?

Sub-warp, Arkadia to Cyrene

Both Wolta and Nocturaline had logged out on the ship earlier in the evening. I got myself into the big black and headed out to the training area after summoning Lizzy. Once in the zone we picked up a few mobs and headed toward Cyrene with Lizzy repairing.

The journey was quite dull and Lizzy logged part way through. I did get a chance to catch up with Bonnie and there was some space chat to pass the time. Managed to write my blog for last week.

Space Skilling Saturday 24 (and thence Toulan)

Location:- Arkadia Space.
Time:- 1800 MA.
Present:- Wolta, Nocturaline & Myself

All were present and correct at the appointed time. Nocturaline was already aboard, I had to leave the Arkadian surface and once aboard summoned Wolta who kindly added some oil to the vessel. We were slightly early but waited until 1800 before leaving as none of us had heard from Vinge for a couple of days.

As has become most usual I took the first shift at the helm, the Cosmic Horrors were easy to find and I soon amassed quite a large collection, unfortunately it did not take long before they stopped giving any skills, so I had to turret them, luckily we were still close to the station so it did not take long. On the next foray it took considerably longer to find the Horrors and by the third they were very sparse but my hour was up and I handed over to Wolta. We have started to change pilot by having the next pilot stand right behind the chair and watch for it to be vacated, when it is the old pilot emerges behind the new and the new can enter the chair very swiftly.

Wolta seemed to do better at finding the Horrors than I did, certainly Nocturaline and I were kept busy with the RK-20s very soon after Wolta took the chair, I swear I could feel the heat from mine. When Wolta handed over to Nocturaline, she crashed to desktop at the same time I had a lock-up and thought I was going to crash but survived.

Nocturaline reported that there were plenty of mobs around, she also spotted a blue marker but lost it before getting an identity. My RK-20 did not get the opportunity to cool so clearly there were many Horrors in the zone.

To begin with Space chat was very quiet, I did say good evening but got no reply, I suspect most were on the surfaces of various planets taking advantage of the extra skills available this weekend. Toward the end it got very busy with a new repairer trying to board the ship, unfortunately he got killed by some of the mobs that were following us, twice I think. It seems he was unaware that he needed to request access first. By the time we had sorted it out it we had only about 10 minutes of scheduled time left. Fortunately SC was just firing up Kronan so he joined there. I have now added him to my FL and the ship’s guest list, I have also given the address of this site, hopefully he will be able to join us for future sessions.

We departed for Toulan about 10 minutes behind schedule as Nocturaline turreted the Horrors that were no longer giving skill, by this time Wolta was falling asleep so she logged. Nocturaline still had the helm and set a course while I sat in the lower right turret and caught up with writing this log entry whilst watching Toulan get bigger at full magnification. I do like these lower turrets, the gun barrels are very slim and a better view is available. Calculated travel time was about 2 hours and 10 minutes which turned out to be correct. It was a nice journey during which I chatted with a few people, at the end Nocturaline took me to the surface in her quad, piloted all the way.

My entertainment for the evening started with BBC Radio 3, Jazz Record Requests and Jazz Line up, both of which were broadcast later than normal but still ended at the same time as the Skilling session.

Space Skilling Saturday 23 (at Next Island)

Location:- Next Island Space.
Time:- 1800 MA.
Present:- Wolta, Nocturaline & Myself

I had not realised that I was low on welding wire, and that both my RK-5 and my RK-20 were close to expiry, so about 2 hours before the session I made a quick supply run to Arkadia where I stocked up on all 3 items. Good job I did, when it came to RK-20s both Wolta and Nocturaline would not have lasted the session.

Vinge was unaware that we were doing this at Next Island until about 5 minutes before we were due to start. I had tried to let her know earlier in the day but her visits to EU are often very brief. She elected not to make the trip in her Sleipnir. Had she been on earlier I could have given her a lift.

We set off slightly late as we had to trade for RK-20s before we began. I took the first hour and found it easy to get a big group of Cosmic Horrors, skills were very good to start with and I managed a new level in Captain skill with which I am most pleased. I had a little over an hour at the controls and at the end had moved to an almost empty sector of the training ground.

Wolta took the next stint, judging by how quickly the SI went down she must have found quite a few mobs very quickly, Nocturaline and I were both kept busy at our repair stations while Wolta turreted the herd she had collected before returning to the training ground for more.

Nocturaline was next, first thing she did was turret what was there. After that it was business as usual, both Wolta and I were kept busy, we ended the session at 2100 MA, all of us were tired.

Space chat was active in spurts, there was an interesting conversation about what the colour of the triangles denoting vehicles means, it seems it’s a bit complicated and there is a thread on Planet Calypso Forum about it which I started to read while repairing, fortunately I realised this was a bad idea before there were any serious consequences although I did try attacking the reactor with a knife as well as using a regeneration chip on it, neither of which worked. I’ll read it tomorrow now it’s time to sleep.
